Suddenly Tissières raised his head; and, without looking at Métrailler, said, “Say…” And then, “You never told me what happened to you.”

“When?”

“You know, when we went to find you.”

“Oh, I’d have come back on my own…”

Neither man looked at the other one, because Tissières was looking at the fire and smoking his pipe, and Métrailler was looking at his feet, his elbows on his knees, leaning forward.

“Is that true?”

“You saw, I wasn’t too far from the village…”

“Yes, but where were you?”

“Well, yes, I was in the ravine…”

“And it was night.”

“And so what?” said Métrailler.

The words came with difficulty; he had trouble answering, he was reticent. Only it seemed that Tissières was set on knowing everything and wasn’t letting himself be discouraged by his friend’s silences. He kept on, “I was worried, you know, because of the ravine, because of the night… and all of us were following your tracks and we had a lantern: you…”

Cyprien sat up, he took his pipe from his mouth. “Don’t I know the mountain as well as you do?”

“That’s not what I mean. It’s just… how did you lose your tracks on the way back?”

They were two friends, they always hunted together; and now Métrailler abruptly ducked his head again, having seen that it wouldn’t be so easy to deceive Tissières. He said, “You’re not drinking?”
